Is an iron infusion right for me?
Iron deficiency is common and can be a cause of fatigue, poor concentration, poor performance at work or school and poor exercise tolerance. In children, it can impact cognitive development. It can also cause restless legs. Iron deficiency can happen due to bleeding such as heavy menstrual bleeding, gastric losses and pregnancy and, in some cases, dietary deficiency. Oral iron is often difficult to tolerate causing constipation and nausea and it takes a long time to restore your iron levels.
We can offer IV iron infusions which bring your iron levels up immediately and quickly resolve symptoms. It is almost side effect free with only a few incredibly rare side effects which we can discuss with you. The benefits of quickly correcting your iron levels include better energy, concentration, exercise tolerance, work performance and resolution of restless legs. In children, it ensures cognitive development is not interrupted.
Adelaide Blood Care offers iron infusions for adults, children over 9 years old and pregnant women in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy. All infusions are given under the expert care of haematologist Dr Jane Thompson who remains with you throughout the infusion. She will also assess causes and what can be done to prevent future iron deficiency. Our infusions are affordable, fast and easy and we can offer expedited appointments to help you feel your best as quickly as possible. To access infusions, ask your GP to write you a referral.
